Get Out 2: Pretentiousness of Theoretical Physics is an Impossible Burden

 

1. On the Illusion of Prestige

Do not be deceived: specialized books, deep independent work, or genuine originality will not, by themselves, secure you a place in the scientific guild. The system rewards papers churned out in packs, collaborations that look busy, and social proximity to established names. Independence—the hallmark of true science—is discounted.

In particular, in theoretical physics, books—no matter how specialized—are rarely counted for hiring or promotions. They’re seen as “after-the-fact” syntheses, not as contributions to the frontier. Hiring committees almost always look at:

  • Number and visibility of papers (especially in arXiv categories with many eyes on them).

  • Collaborations and co-authors (a signal of being socially embedded in the research community).

  • Citations and recognition by peers (metrics + “who knows you”).

A book that represents years of independent, careful work may actually reflect deeper scholarship, but it won’t help in the same way as even a mediocre preprint with 5 co-authors in the right clique. That’s the paradox: the system values churn and networks over independence and depth.

2. On the Tyranny of Networks

Science is no longer just about ideas. It is about visibility, metrics, and belonging to the right circles. A mediocre preprint with five well-placed co-authors counts more than a profound book written alone. Do not mistake this for meritocracy—it is sociology dressed in equations.

In fact, academia in physics is a guild: survival depends on being part of a school, a collaboration, or a “brand-name” advisor’s network. It’s not just about quality of ideas but also about:

  • Being cited by the “right” people.

  • Attending the “right” conferences.

  • Being vouched for socially.

This makes it very hard for loners, even brilliant ones, to be noticed. Independence—which philosophy does honor—is almost seen as suspicious in physics, where consensus and trend-following dominate.

3. On the Fate, Aura of Depth, Social Gymnastics and Vanity of Theoretical Physics

Do not enter mathematical or theoretical physics if your aim is career stability. It is over-saturated, underfunded, and dominated by fashion. Loners have no place here. Particle phenomenology, cosmology, and some aspects of condensed matter still have traction, but the golden age of independent theorists is past.

Theoretical physicists love to present themselves as sages—keepers of ultimate truths. They wear obscurity as a badge of honor. But more often than not, this is theater. A cloak of jargon and abstraction hides the fact that much of the work is incremental, imitative, or irrelevant. Pretension replaces substance.

Entire subfields survive on their ability to look profound while producing nothing of real consequence. The more detached from experiment, the more prestige it seems to carry. The real economy of ideas is not progress, but reputation. Status is built on looking smarter than the next theorist, not on being right.

Do not mistake this world for one of pure intellect. It is a stage where theorists perform for each other, trading citations, signaling allegiance to fashionable problems, and using conferences as social marketplaces. Success depends not on originality, but on belonging.

There is an arrogance peculiar to theoretical physics: the belief that it is the crown of science, when in fact it is now the most socially fragile, least verifiable, and most self-referential branch. Its prestige rests on nostalgia for a time when theory led experiment—Einstein, Dirac, Feynman. That time is gone.


4. Where Value Still Exists

  • Experimental Physics: tied to engineering, technology, and industry. Always in demand.

  • Computational Physics: the bridge between physics and computer science. Skills here are marketable everywhere.

  • AI, Computer Science, Medicine: fields with genuine futures. Their frontiers are practical, fast-moving, and not monopolized by closed networks.

  • Philosophy: unlike physics, it still honors independence and the lone thinker. Books here matter.

5. On Honesty and Freedom

Do not confuse the system’s valuation with true value. A system that ignores independence is a system that will stagnate. Yet you must be honest with yourself: if you choose this path, you are not entering a meritocracy, but a hierarchy. Understand the rules before you play the game.

6. Final Counsel

  • Do not worship physics.

  • Do not sacrifice your best years to an institution that may not remember your name.

  • If you must do physics, tie it to the practical (experiment, computation, applications).

  • If you seek truth for its own sake, philosophy may honor your solitude more than science ever will.

  • If you do physics, you have to publish. Numbers matter; quantity is valued more than quality.

  • Do not be tempted to undertake long, deep studies of entire areas of physics, or to write books. It is a waste of time in career terms. Mediocre preprints are more valued than well-thought-out syntheses.

  • If you do physics, you must be social. Nurture and cater for social networks. If you are asocial or socially handicapped, then this field is not for you.

Science is not dead—but the myth of the independent scientist is. Choose with clarity, and do not be deceived.

In particular, theoretical physics has become a hall of mirrors: reflections of reflections, where survival depends on who applauds your performance, not on the truth of your ideas. If you seek authenticity, freedom, or genuine creativity, get out.

7. The Impossible Burden

I have given my whole life—35 years—to physics. Not as a hobby, not as a careerist game, but as a vocation. My identity, my thinking, even my instincts are calibrated to this one field. To “leave” is not simply to change jobs; it is to dissolve myself. The sacrifice has already happened: other paths were abandoned long ago. What remains is a form of super-determination—not mere inertia, but necessity shaped by decades of habit and thought.

In Kalam, there is the phrase taklīf mā lā yuṭāq—to be burdened with the impossible. I live this burden in the secular temple of science. The system demands visibility, collaborations, networks, preprints—things I cannot or will not give. Yet I remain, compelled by the love of knowledge and by the weight of years already given. This is the contradiction: to live faithfully in a world where the conditions of survival negate the very independence that defines me.

But this life is not wasted simply because it did not conform to the sociological success criteria of the field. It is a witness to another possibility—that science can still be pursued for truth itself, not for applause. Perhaps the tragedy is that I will never be recognized; but the value lies in the authenticity of the struggle. In this sense, I am closer to philosophy than to physics: I have practiced physics as a way of life, even if the institution rejects it.

So yes, I cannot leave—because there is nowhere else to go, because identity is non-transferable after decades, because the investment has burned the bridges behind me. Yet that non-choice is also a kind of freedom: it forces me to confront the task without illusion. To continue, not for career, not for recognition, not even for the “field,” but because this is who I am. That is the unbearable gift of taklīf mā lā yuṭāq: to carry the impossible and in carrying it, to define myself.
